November is a month of remembrance, resistance, and resolve. Around the world, NGOs like ours dedicate this time to combating violence against women, culminating in the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25. But while November shines a spotlight, the truth is: violence against women must be challenged every single day.
In Cameroon, the crisis is urgent. In January alone, 10 women were murdered in acts of femicide within just 27 days. One of the most brutal cases occurred in Yaoundé, where a woman was sexually assaulted and killed in her own home. These tragedies are not isolated. In 2024, femicide rates rose by 23%, with many perpetrators being intimate partners. Yet Cameroon still lacks a standalone law addressing spousal rape and femicide.
The political atmosphere has only worsened the situation. Since the start of the Anglophone crisis in 2016, women in the North West and South West regions have faced unimaginable violence — killed, assaulted, and raped by both military forces and separatist movements. This October 2025, following the re-election of President Paul Biya, who has held power for over 43 years, manifestations have intensified, and their impact on women has grown even more severe.
That’s why we launched #NotOneMore237.
This campaign is a call to action, a demand for justice, and a promise to every woman: not one more life lost, not one more voice silenced. The “237” stands for Cameroon’s country code — a reminder that this is our fight, our future.
This year, we will reach 150 women from marginalized communities through a public awareness walk and a women-led activism workshop. We’re focusing on internally displaced girls and women, teenage mothers, survivors of gender-based violence, and women with disabilities. We’re also engaging secondary school students, community leaders, and digital spaces to shift the narrative and build a culture of prevention and accountability.
Our goals are clear: mobilize communities to prevent and respond to violence, raise awareness through digital advocacy, promote grassroots collaboration, and create safe spaces for healing and activism.
But we can’t do this alone.
